The 5Cs of Nexgen STEM School

The 5Cs of Nexgen STEM School

At Nexgen STEM School, we teach students to build things.

Gadgets, Robots. Circuits. Games. 3D models. Code. Electronics.

But the end product is not really the point.

It is the vehicle. What we are really trying to build is young people who are confident enough to try, curious enough to ask questions, creative enough to imagine possibilities, thoughtful enough to solve problems, and connected enough to care about the people around them.

These are what we call the 5 Cs of Nexgen. Think of it as our reason to be.

  1. Confidence

  2. Curiosity

  3. Creativity

  4. Critical Thinking

  5. Community

They are not just words for a poster (although we love posters). They shape how we design our programs, how we work with students, support teachers and what we believe education should do.

Confidence matters because students need encouragement and experience before they are willing to try difficult things. Curiosity matters because questions are often the beginning of discovery. Creativity matters because every child has the ability to imagine possibilities, especially when they are given the knowledge, discipline, and freedom to explore. Critical Thinking matters because ideas need to be questioned, tested, refined, and turned into realistic solutions. One of the funniest things I ever heard (pretty sad too though) is Sir Ken Robinson on the creativity of very young children vs the creativity of the average adult - you'll have to look it up but it's worth it.

So... Community is a bit different.

Community is not simply the fifth value sitting beside the others. It surrounds them. It gives them purpose.

A confident, curious, creative, critical thinker can use those qualities for themselves alone. But at Nexgen, we believe those qualities become far more powerful when they are developed in service of others.

We want students to build skills, but we also want them to think beyond themselves:

  • Who can I help?

  • What problem can I solve?

  • How can I contribute?

  • How can I use what I know to make something better for someone else?

That is why Community matters so deeply.

In this series, I want to unpack each of the 5 Cs and explain why they sit at the heart of Nexgen. Not as abstract values, but as practical qualities we see students develop when they build real things, solve real problems, and learn alongside others.

Because the world does not simply need more young people who can code, solder, design, or build.

It needs young people who can use those skills with confidence, curiosity, creativity, critical thinking, and a genuine care for their community.

That is what Nexgen is really about....
